Here at Paleo Plan, we just love jerky. I lovelovelove it, and eat it whenever I can get my hands on it. However, I try and keep away from your basic supermarket jerky (Oberta and whatnot), but don’t always have a chance to get down to my local butcher who makes incredible jerky from local beef.

So, I started looking for some jerky online, to see what I could find. And we found a few suppliers who were nice enough to send some samples. Our first test jerky comes from Slant Shack Jerky. David was kind enough to send me a few sample packs, and I got to try their Hot and Smoky and Original flavors.

The first thing you notice is that this is very thin jerky, but not crispy at all, nor too tough to eat. It was also just coated in flavor, which often found it’s way to my desk and required regular wiping.

As you can see from the above photo, the packs are somewhat small (note the pen for size comparison). Our samplers were 1oz packages, and I found them way to easy to eat all at once. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t plow through two packages in one quick sitting. But, good jerky doesn’t last long in my presence, so it takes a big bag to stick around longer than a few minutes.

You can get your Slant Shack Jerky made from grass-fed or USDA Prime, and you can build to order with a number of rubs and flavors. I had the grass-fed and loved it (note that it’s $3.50 more per ounce when ordering the small packages).

Not all of their ingredients are strict Paleo, and if you’ve a strong gluten intolerance, make sure you talk to them about getting yours made without soy sauce. However, because you can get it without a rub or a glaze, you should be good to go.

All-in-all, I really enjoyed the jerky. But it is very expensive, and even if you’re getting a pound vs. the 1oz packages, you’re paying $40 for the pound. Not cheap. And that’s before shipping. But if you really love to get your jerky just the way you like it, this is a great way to do it while getting grass-fed beef and fantastic service (if you read their site, you’ll notice they come complete with a huge sense of humor).
