I recently had the opportunity to try out some of the meals and side dishes made by PaleoOnTheGo.com, which is a company out of Florida that prepares Paleo foods and ships them directly to your home. They’re giving Paleo Plan readers 10% off right now on your first order, so I wanted to give you guys some info on them.

Ingredients Exclude…

They make their foods without soy, wheat, barley, rye, corn, sugar, preservatives, rice, dairy (except for ghee sometimes), white potatoes, legumes, vegetable oils, or wheat/white flour.

Ingredients Include…

They make their entrees, side dishes, kid friendly dishes, breakfasts, and snacks using grass-fed beef and bison, pork, duck, venison, lamb, free-range chicken, turkey, organic vegetables and fruits, herbs and spices, coconut oil, coconut aminos, coconut milk, coconut flour, arrowroot, clarified butter (ghee), almonds, cashews, pecans.

Meat Quality

I have a big issue with conventional meats: I don’t like eating them, much less buying them. PaleoOnTheGo.com isn’t too specific on their website about what meats they use, so I asked the founder, Dave Rohde, about it. Here’s what he said (links are mine):

We use only the best meats, including humanely raised animals, no hormones or antibiotics, grass-fed beef, pastured meats, and free-range chicken. It has certainly been a challenge getting the best of the best supplies while trying to keep costs reasonable. Even though we buy in higher bulk we don’t get much of a break. Our pork is pastured heritage pork from Mountain Valley Farm in Ellijay, Ga. We have been getting our beef at Black Wing farms. We want to offer the healthiest and tastiest products and will continue to bring the consumer the best possible meats.

So there’s a man making a big effort to keep the standards of Paleo high. Thanks for that, Dave.

Cost of Meals

The big question: how much? I’ll give you a few examples, but you can go check their prices out at their store here, too. A 7-ounce maple burger (yes, that’s a burger with a bit of maple syrup and other spices in it) is $10.50. Their roast duck confit with sour cherry sauce (2 leg quarters) is $23.99. Their sides run between about $4.49 to $10.99. However, there’s also the shipping cost…

Shipping

Here’s the clincher, and it’s sort of a big one. If you’re not going to buy a lot of these things at a time, it’s going to get really expensive to ship. For instance, to ship one $$14.99 Elk Burger with Wild Mushrooms to Colorado, it’s about $32. Yes, you read that right. Bringing my total to about $45. However, if you were to buy 20 of those items for a total of $299.80, my shipping to Colorado would be FREE, making each item $14.99. And the closer you are to Florida, the cheaper it is. Alabama shipping for that same 20-item box would be FREE. Their shipping info can be found here.

Seriously, go check their products out – they have some really delicious-looking creative stuff.

So here’s what I had.

Roast Lamb with Gravy

This was a really delicious entreé. It was moist, flavorful, well-seasoned, and not overdone. I liked it.

Cilantro Pork Stir Fry

Again, I enjoyed this entreé quite a bit. I actually ate way too much food the night I cooked all these entreés and side dishes. I had them in my freezer and had honestly forgotten about them. Then one night I was scrambling to make dinner for my husband and me. I remembered them and 10 minutes later there was dinner on the table :) There have been times since then when I wished I had more of them in my freezer.

Leek and Sweet Potato Soup

Honestly, this is some of the best soup I’ve ever had in my life. If I could recreate it and make it for myself, I might eat it every day, hot or cold. It was that good.

I received another dish – their Broccoli and Mushroom Soup, which has been temporarily taken down from the site. I’ll give you the link in case it comes back up. It, too, was some of the best soup I’ve ever had. Maybe I don’t get out enough, but I really could not stop eating that soup :)

Who Could Benefit from This Service

If you know there are some days when you’re not going to want to or have enough time to cook, you might want to consider buying a handful (or a freezer full) of these meals. If you work a ton and your fallback is pizza or other non-Paleo foods, and those foods subsequently make you feel horrible, this is your Paleo answer. If you want to take a break from cooking, these are your solution, and they’re way cheaper and higher quality than most restaurant foods. That is, if you buy them in bulk.

So check these guys out!
