I found out yesterday that it’s Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week until March 9th. Today I want to focus on the resources that are out there for people with multiple sclerosis, or any autoimmune or neurodegenerative disease, for that matter.

Here’s a list of resources you should check out if you suffer from an autoimmune diseases, or if someone you love does.

1. Terry Wahls

If you haven’t yet, please watch Dr. Terry Wahl’s TED talk on how she kicked multiple sclerosis’s butt with her diet. It ended up being a Paleo diet with some modifications, and she got off her medications, got out of her wheelchair, and started living her life again through diet, exercise, meditation, and other lifestyle modifications. It wasn’t the easy way, but it worked.

Dr. Terry Wahls is also about to release a book describing her protocol, called The Wahls Protocol.

She and her team (she’s a clinical researcher and a professor of medicine at the University of Iowa) have also done clinical trials on real human subjects, showing that diet and lifestyle modifications can increase the quality of life for MS patients.

2. Sarah Ballantyne (aka ThePaleoMom.com)

Screen-Shot-2014-03-05-at-10.43.22-PM.pngSarah Ballantyne, PhD is the blogger at www.thepaleomom.com, which is a about not only healing autoimmune disorders with Paleo, but also being a Paleo parent, cooking Paleo, and more. Sarah is the cohost of the top-rated  The Paleo View podcast, and the author of two books The Paleo Approach and The Paleo Approach Cookbook.

She earned her doctorate degree in medical biophysics and spent years studying inflammation, all while suffering from a laundry list of symptoms and autoimmune disorders herself, and being 120 pounds overweight. After going Paleo, she healed herself of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, acid reflux, migraines, anxiety, asthma, allergies, psoriasis and an autoimmune skin condition called lichen planus. She was actually able to get off of six prescription medications, some of which she had been on for 12 years, within two weeks of changing her diet.

So she knows a thing or two about combatting inflammation with diet ;) Here are her best resources.

3. Nutrisclerosis.com

Screen-Shot-2014-03-05-at-10.42.00-PM-199x300.pngThis fine young woman, Whitney Ross Gray, successfully managed MS with Paleo and created her website, www.nutrisclerosis.com, to direct other people with autoimmune disorders to the resources she used to heal herself.

Most notably, she put together an expert panel discussion on the superhumanradio.com show with herself, Terry Wahls, Paul Jaminet (The Perfect Health Diet), and Sarah Ballantyne!

It was almost a 2-hour discussion where she asked her three guests a long list of audience-generated questions about how to overcome the hurdles of going Paleo.

The talk is specifically meant for people with autoimmune diseases, and they talk about things like

  • how to talk to your doctor about Paleo and get him/her on board
  • whether or not to eat dairy
  • how many carbs to eat
  • what the autoimmune protocol is
  • and a lot more

And it’s FREE.

4. Our 21-Day Paleo Cleanse eBook!

Cover-of-The-Paleo-Plan-21-Day-Paleo-Cleanse-eBook-231x300.jpgOur 21-Day Paleo Cleanse ebook, explains the connection between food, your digestion, your immune system, and autoimmunity. But it also provides you with a 21-day Autoimmune Protocol Meal Plan, complete with grocery shopping lists, menus, and recipes.

Our chef, Molly, and I hand-crafted this resource for people who need to follow the Autoimmune Protocol. It contains NO grains, legumes, seed oils, or dairy, as any Paleo meal plan would. But we also removed eggs, nightshades, nuts, seeds, and alcohol from this cleanse so you can really figure out what exactly your body is sensitive to.
