Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoon(s) olive oil or coconut oil
  • 1 medium onion(s) chopped
  • 1 medium bell pepper(s), green chopped
  • 2 medium garlic clove(s) minced
  • 1 pound(s) beef, ground
  • 1 can(s) tomato sauce (15 oz)
  • 1 tablespoon(s) chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon(s) cumin

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil when hot.
  2. Add onion, green pepper, and garlic, and saute until tender (about 10 minutes).
  3. Add ground beef, and continue to cook until beef starts to brown, stirring occasionally (about 8- 10 minutes).
  4. Finally, stir in tomato sauce, chili powder and ground cumin.
  5. Remove from heat and serve when beef is cooked through and tomato sauce is hot.

      You may add or subtract whatever you’d like to these sloppy joes. Paleo buns are pretty paleo, but you just have to be aware of the calories they’ll add if you’re trying to lose weight.

  3. This was so good even my picky eater 7 year-old was ‘wolfing’ it down! He said he wanted to eat Paleo-Joe’s for the rest of his life…Rather than using butter lettuce, which doesn’t really go over with the kiddo, I served it in a bowl (chili-style) with some celery ribs. Amazing!

  4. I made this tonight and it was a big hit with our family. I doctored it a bit, added more cumin and more chili powder. And added a dash of cloves and red wine vinegar for a bit of tang. The cloves gave it that old-school hint of sweet without added sugar. Yum!

  5. This was great! I added a 1/4 tsp of coriander and a 1/4 tsp of cayenne. I ate it over spaghetti squash. This was the best paleo dinner I’ve had so far! (going on 2 weeks paleo).

  6. I make these all the time and LOVE them! I always add a bit of raw honey to sweeten them and then usually serve them over sauteed zuch.

  7. I’m just getting into paleo so maybe that had something to do with it but it was WAY too spicy for us, maybe I just have way hot chili powder, I don’t know. Anyway I had to wash off all the meat to make it edible and then since I had I only had 1 small can of tomatoes left, I had to use water and ketchup to make it taste better. Thankfully I still had ketchup in the house or it would have been a total loss.

    1. Saracolette – No, that’s not a typo. Nothing wrong with a little coconut oil. If you’re trying to cut down on calories then by all means decrease it, but that amount of oil will make filling servings that aren’t too high in calories for most people.

  8. Delish!!! I added a 2nd bell pepper, thought it didn’t look enough with just 1. I also thought it was a bit bland; I added more chili powder & cumin & also some sea salt. I also only had like half a can of tomato sauce so I added a can of tomato paste in substitution. I really liked it- ate in in a bowl, chili style. My bf, who is not purposely eating Paleo (only when I prepare his food lol), he ate his with chips.
    Very good, def better than that canned sloppy joes! :)

  9. Maybe I’m the only one noticing this but, doesn’t using a canned tomato sauce completely go against the point of the diet’s lack of refined salts?

    Why why why is there no consistency?

  11. Very good receipe – used the lettuce wraps as suggested. I did add more seasoning because my family loves spicy stuff.

  12. This was SO flavorful! The only change I made was to add some sea salt, but that’s my personal preference. This was so very tasty–hubby went back for seconds!

    1. Froggie G – My first choices are always tallow and lard (from high quality sources), but olive oil and avocado oil are both options, too!

  13. I serve sloppy joes over Paleo Almond Biscuits. Very easy, makes 4, 1/2 cup almond flour, 1/4 cup each coconut flour and milled golden flax seed, 3 eggs, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 tbsp almond or walnut oil. Mix well, use cupcake liners, fill to the top and lightly pack down, bake on 400 for about 15-17 minutes.

  14. Grayzone You must be new to cooking you remind me of my husband. It is difficult if you aren’t used to cooking much and trying a whole new style on top.of that. I would say rely more on your gut and go ahead and taste as you go. I think most of us are doing a bit of winging it here which is one of the things I like best. I love all the different ideas and the experimental tone. Just have more confidence in yourself.

  15. I love this and so does my family! My kids ask me when im making sloppy joes again all the time! I am so glad I can give them this kids favorite but in a healthy way!

  16. I have been thoroughly enjoying these meals! I am on Week 4 now. I cannot bring up the recipe for Celeriac Fries that are on meal 8 for week of 2/15 – 2/21/15. Only the Sloppy Joes recipe is shown.

  17. I thought these would be too Mexicany but tasted great.
    Green peppers don’t like me so I used some mini yellow and orange peppers.
    And I used purple onion. A little messy on my lettuce leaves so ended up eating with fork but yummy. Thanks for the easy recipes, just my kind!
