With summer comes sunshine, and as wonderful as that bright burning ball of Vitamin D may be, we all know that spending too much time in the sun (at once) can lead to some painful outcomes.
It’s tempting to slather sunscreens & lotions that claim to be anti-aging on your skin, but have you ever stopped to read the ingredient list on your skincare products?
It might be due time for a…SKINTERVENTION!
As the largest organ in the human body, the skin is our first line of defense against the outside world. Considering the skin’s amazing ability to absorb nutrients (as well as toxins), we think what you put on your skin is just as important as what you put inside of your body!
Unfortunately, many skincare products contain toxic ingredients that are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, and can contribute to a host of health problems ranging from skin allergies to damaged DNA to cancer. Ironically, a recent study out of Sweden showed that nonsmokers who avoided the sun had life expectancies similar to smokers who “soaked up the rays”…so staying out of the sun isn’t the solution either! So what is?
The key to protecting your skin in the summer isn’t to avoid the sun, but moderating your time spent in it. Wide-brimmed hats, umbrellas, protective clothing, and good old-fashioned shade are all great alternatives to toxic sunscreens that can do more harm than good. Mineral-based sunscreens, (such as zinc oxide) may be less toxic as they reflect sun rays (instead of absorbing them) and penetrate the skin less readily.
Replacing chemical-based products for whole-food products is another way to Paleoize your skincare routine. I absolutely love my Fatco skincare and Mother Dirt spritzers and cleansers, made from Paleo ingredients and health-promoting probiotics.
