Makes two servings. Serve with a vegetable for a complete meal.
Approximate cooking time: 20-35 minutes
Ingredients
- 2 (5 oz-6 oz, about 1" thick) beef steaks (rib-eye, sirloin, strip, tenderloin)
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp sea salt (optional)
- 2-3 Tbs coconut oil or tallow, melted
Instructions
- Preheat broiler to high.
- In a small bowl, combine oregano, black pepper, garlic, sea salt (optional) and oil or tallow.
- Place steaks on broiler pan and brush both sides with oil mixture.
- Broil 2"-3" from heat source (usually the very top of the oven) for 7 minutes for medium-rare (8 minutes for medium). Remove from oven and turn steaks. Return to oven and broil the other side an additional 5 minutes for medium-rare (6 minutes for medium).
- When desired internal temperature is reached, remove steaks from oven, cover with foil and let rest 5 minutes. Serve with your favorite vegetable or side.
NOTE: To cook steaks on the stove top, heat a heavy bottomed skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 tsp oil or fat when pan is hot. Add steaks and cook for 10 minutes for medium rare. Turn and continue to cook for another 14 minutes. Remove from heat, cover with foil, and let rest 5 minutes before serving.

I haven’t tried this one yet, but if its catching fire in the oven, try ditching the oil/lard and using the spices alone as a rub. Oil + open flame = internal combustion engine? If its catching fire on the stove, some oil might have splashed out. Try using less, just enough to coat the bottom of the pan. Or cover the pan while cooking. No air = no fire. Good luck. Keep the phone handy and 911 on speed dial

I made it and it was very good. I definitely did not follow cooking instructions for the broiler. After seeing the comments about catching on fire I was a bit hesitant. So I did 6 mins and then flipped the steaks and cooked for 4 more minutes. You could definitely cook for less time than specified. Maybe that’s why it caught on fire?

This was fabulous! I had never used my broiler before, but so glad I did. The instructions and timing were spot on. I used a 2 lb flatiron steak cut into serving sizes. Even though it was a lean cut, it was still juicy and delicious. We don’t have a grill so I never make steak at home, but I know my husband will be thrilled to have it added to our dinner rotation!

Hehe it does say to preheat the broiler on high and that’s why it would’ve caught on fire from being too hot. You should only turn on the pan to heat up once you’re ready to cook your meat.

Mine caught fire too!!! C’mon man, 1/4 cup is way way way too much oil. Another recipe called for 2tbsp of cayenne when it should’ve been 2tsp.

AlexJab – Which recipe called for 2tbsp cayenne when it should’ve been 2 tsp? I’d love to fix that!

Grilled it here. Skipped the oil and should have cut way back on the seasoning. This is a recipe for bad cuts of beef or people who don’t care for the natural flavor of a good piece of beef. Grass fed tends to be so much tastier than grain fed anyway.
